[ARCHIVED] Rec Center Policy Change: No Unaccompanied Children Under 14

In an effort to comply with Governor Mike DeWine’s directive banning mass gatherings of 100 or more people, the City of Westlake will implement a new, temporary policy at the Recreation Center when it reopens Monday morning following a thorough, 3-day cleaning effort.

Beginning Monday, March 16 and ending April 5, children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to enter the facility, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

We recognize that this policy will be inconvenient for many working families with children who are now out of school on extended Spring Break due to Coronavirus concerns.

Many parents have relied on the Rec Center’s long-running policy that children aged 10 and older may gain admission without a parent or guardian present.

However, the number of children the city reasonably expects the center would accommodate in light of the school closings has led to the conclusion that the existing policy would be untenable over the next few weeks. It is easy to imagine that number would far exceed 100 children.

We apologize for the inconvenience but safety is our number one priority. We will reassess near the end of this time frame.

Thank you for your understanding during this challenging and unprecedented situation.

If you have any questions or concerns, please called the Rec Center at 440-808-5700 or email recinfo@cityofwestlake.org.
