The City of Westlake commemorated the 150th Anniversary of Arbor Day and its 31st year recognized as a Tree City USA with a planting ceremony at Dover Intermediate School on April 29.
Prior to the ceremony, six fifth-grade students were awarded a ribbon and a proclamation from Mayor Dennis M. Clough for their outstanding entries in the annual poster contest judged by the Westlake Tree Commission.
The proclamations designated one day in the City of Westlake in honor of each of the winners: Seraphina Jia, Netalina Giardini, Sophia Pande, Allyssa Chen, Maya Gentry and Kate Puchmeyer.
A beautiful Show Time crabapple tree was provided by the City and planted by the students at Dover Intermediate School. The Mayor, Service Director Paul Quinn III, Urban Forestry Manager Stan Barnard, and other members of the Westlake Service Department and the city’s Tree Commission assisted with the planting. The poster contest winners had the honor of scooping the first shovelfuls of soil.
The Westlake Tree Commission includes Mary Beth Schneidler, Ken Sadd and Justin Parks, as well as Quinn and Barnard.
